Greetings to your Ruth-Bader-Ginsburg-is-in-the-hospital freakout, caused by the 85-year-old courtroom justice falling in her workplace and fracturing a few ribs. I'm not RBG's physician, but I'm one of her biographers, here to confer with her elegance.
This isn't the first-time RBG, currently 85 and also the earliest justice on the court, has attempted to power by means of a knee injury; in 2012 she dropped and cracked two ribs. At the time, her primary complaint was that it arrived in"the worst possible time" (it might get worse, as we learned today!) She managed to hold on her record of not missing a day on the bench, which she may still hold, based on her healing period. A year after, in 80 years old, she disclosed into the Times,"I do not water-ski anymore. I have not gone horseback riding in four decades. I have not ruled that out entirely. But water-skiing, these days are over." She did not mention that the whitewater rafting.
She'd already survived cancer twice, one a severe bout with pancreatic cancer in 1999 and another an early-detection wonder of pancreatic cancer ten decades after. It was in the wake of her illness that her husband persuaded her to start seeing her coach, Bryant Johnson, who has also since trained justices Kagan and Breyer. She is now so dedicated to her fitness regime that she left a dinner with Obama in the White House early so as not to forget a sweat. Her trainer, who has recently published his very own workout book and who showed off their routine on the Late Show With Stephen Colbert, calls her T.A.N. - hard as nails. When I interviewed her, I personally confirmed with her that she can do 20 push-ups, though she answered with her signature accuracy:"Yes, however we do at a time," she said, and laughed. "And then I breathe for a bit and do the second set."
She needed to be talked into going to the hospital then, too. My co-author Shana Knizhnik, who a year previously has created the Notorious RBG meme to celebrate the justice's dissent from the Shelby County voting-rights case, was scheduled to go to RBG in the courtroom not long after that, and presumed it would be rescheduled. Not so. In her chambers, Shana and a handful of additional meme manufacturers (including Call Your Girlfriend co-host Aminatou Sow) requested RBG what message she had for her lovers. "You can tell them," she answered,"I'll be doing push-ups next week."
